Session 1

Writing and Publishing Your Novel

Plan It, Write It, Publish It

It’s never too soon to start taking yourself seriously as a writer. In this class we cover novel writing from concept to publication. Students learn to craft their characters, create the world they live in (real or fantasy) and construct plots that keep readers hooked. We also cover the business end of things: how to get an agent and publisher or how to self-publish, and how to market your work. We have visits from published novelists—and you will work closely with other talented students like yourself to form a supportive writing community. Whether you’re at the beginning stages with your ideas or you already have a novel started, this class will give you the knowledge and inspiration you need.

Curriculum

Students learn how to create characters, plot and settings for their novels. Students who are completely new to novel writing should have a cast of viable characters, one or two basic settings and a rough outline of their plot. Students coming in with a draft or parts of a draft learn to refine all of these key elements. Students explore the process for finding an agent and publisher, as well as the process for self-publishing.
