Session 2

Instrumental Music

Perform and Rehearse

String, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians will learn in an immersive program that includes ensembles; instrument specific masterclasses and lessons; and related topics such as composition, improvisation, music theory and conducting. Students will participate in full concert rehearsals and sectionals, engage in masterclasses and participate in elective classes. The program will culminate in a performance in Faye Spanos Concert Hall that will be open to all.

The instrumental music program is intended for students who play an instrument in their school band and/or orchestra and are interested in continuing those experiences at the Summer High School Institute.

Curriculum

Our curriculum will help you improve artistic and technical skills, introduce you to new composers and repertoire and offer you opportunity to collaborate with fellow musicians to learn and perform music. Regardless of your incoming ability level, you will leave feeling that your playing has improved and you will have a greater understanding of the ensemble rehearsal process.

Planned Topics

In the morning, you will be involved in instrumental rehearsals led by the lead professor and sectionals led by applied teachers. The sectionals will allow for small group collaboration where instrument-specific instruction and technical skills will be developed. The afternoon will be spent in electives followed by a final rehearsal to wrap up the day.
