The 2020 virtual opening Convocation ceremony, part of the Pacific tradition to mark the beginning of our new students' academic journey at University of the Pacific, helped kickoff this year's Weeks of Welcome.

Echoing throughout the ceremony were the themes of intentionality, resilience, community and leadership. Pacific President Christopher Callahan noted the class of 2024 is embarking on their transformational journey during the most difficult time in our lifetime, as the world is battling a paralyzing global health crisis. Because of this, students will be learning and socializing remotely in a virtual environment to begin their college careers.

"Whether the learning environment is in person or on a computer screen, what will not change is the most essential ingredient to your success is you," said Callahan.

However, as Callahan noted, this group is uniquely prepared to rise to this challenge. It is a now-or-never moment for their cohort and they will have to display the qualities of intentionality, resilience, community and leadership to enjoy the full Pacific experience.

"I encourage you to fully engage right from the start," said Callahan. "Be a leader and explore all that Pacific has to offer."

The ceremony concluded with a pinning ceremony and a reciting of Pacific's undergraduate statement of purpose. Students then were able to enjoy a performance of the alma mater “Pacific Hail!” sang by conservatory alumni Tanya Harris '20, Jorge Torrez '20, Kevin Iwai '20 and Davis Mahoney '20.
