Pacific remembers former orthodonics professor Dr. Nathan S. Tom
Dr. Nathan S. Tom, former professor and director of orthodontics at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2019. He was 84.
A native San Franciscan, he opened his general dentistry practice in Newark, California, following his graduation from what was then the College of Physicians and Surgeons (now University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry). After completing his orthodontic post-doctorate degree at the University of Detroit, Tom established his orthodontic office in Fremont, California. Following 30 years of private practice, he joined the faculty at Pacific where he was director of the pre-doctoral program of orthodontics until his retirement. He thoroughly enjoyed all three phases of his career in dentistry.
Tom was inducted as a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, served as president of the Southern Alameda County Dental Society, and was a founder and president of the Organization of Chinese Americans — Southern Alameda County. He was also involved in many other social and professional associations.
Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Su Lee Tom, three children and their spouses, and six grandchildren.
