Pacific introduces program to help students reach personal goals

Well Coaching Introduction

Well Coaching is now available free of charge to all University of the Pacific students through Pacific Recreation.

What is Well Coaching?

Amber Kavehkar, assistant director of fitness, membership and marketing, describes the process as one-to-one conversations that are focused on awareness, contentment and setting and reaching personal goals. Kavehkar is a certified health and wellness coach.

“I’m just introducing it to the campus. I have just recently been certified myself,” Kavehkar said. “This is a relatively new field. It has only been around for the last 10 or 20 years. It thrives off positive psychology and focusing on what people can do.”

The philosophies of Well Coaching are described in this video

The first sessions are for up to 45 minutes as students will meet with Kavehkar to talk about their individual focus and what they would like to emphasize. Students take a free VIA strengths survey as a self-coaching tool. Follow-up meetings will be 30 minutes.

As part of the process:

  • Students will work with the certified coach to determine goals and how to attain them;
  • They will receive non-judgmental support and guidance;
  • Students will be challenged to step outside their comfort zones and invest time in themselves.

“Recreation is more than just sports. It’s really about taking care of the entire person,” Kavehkar said. “We understand that students dictate their own well-being, and we want to make sure we are able to support them in that area.

“Wellness coaching is meant to be a launching off point, so it’s not a forever service. Three months or less is an ideal amount of time for wellness coaching, and then they go and start accomplishing some of the things they want to do.”
