College of the Pacific and Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Liang Xue, associate professor of chemistry, is the principal investigator of a $140,256 grant awarded to University of the Pacific from the National Science Foundation for Major Research Instrumentation (MRI). Co-investigators include Jerry Tsai, professor of chemistry, Andy Franz, professor of chemistry, Xiaoling Li, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, and Mamoun M. Alhamadsheh, associate professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry. The NSF award will fund the purchase of an isothermal titration calorimeter for studying ligand-macromolecule interactions. This instrument will provide a great learning experience for undergraduate and graduate students, both for lab courses and research programs.

Jennifer Harder, Associate Professor of Lawyering Skills, had her 2014 McGeorge Law Review article, "Demand Offsets: Water Neutral Development in California," quoted in B. Thompson, Jr., J. Leshy et al., "Legal Control of Water Resources: Cases and Materials" (6th ed. 2018).  

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Rajul A. Patel '01, '06, professor of pharmacy practice, on behalf of the Medicare Part D Mobile Outreach Clinics, has been awarded a $35,059 Healthy Seniors Grant by San Joaquin County, Aging and Community Services.  

President's Division

Janine Swanson, assistant secretary to the Board of Regents, has been selected to serve on the Board Professional Leadership Group (BPLG) for Board Professionals endorsed by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB). Representing 1,900 member institutions, AGB serves as the premier organization centered on governance in higher education. The BPLG facilitates and encourages educational and professional services and opportunities for board professionals. Swanson will serve on the Programs Committee, which is responsible for planning and implementing the annual Workshop for Board Professionals to be held in Orlando, Florida, in April 2019.

Publications

College of the Pacific

Melissa Davies, assistant professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, published the article, "LPGA schedule hurts its domestic potential," in the Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, where she discusses the opportunities and challenges of growing a global brand, such as the LPGA, and offers ways to add domestic and global intrigue throughout the season.   

Zachary R. Stahlschmidt, assistant professor of biological sciences, and Dustin Johnson '17 co-authored the paper, "Moving targets: Determinants of nutritional preferences and habitat use in an urban ant community," which will be published in Urban Ecosystems. This research was supported in part by a Pacific Fund grant awarded to Johnson and Stahlschmidt.

Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Doug A. Young, professor of diagnostic sciences, co-authored the paper, "Secondary Sjögren syndrome: A case report using silver diamine fluoride and glass ionomer cement," published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (149:8). Co-authors include Allen Wong, professor of diagnostic sciences, and former student Annika Frostad-Thomas.  

Ove Peters, professor and co-chair of endodontics, and Miroslav Tolar, associate professor of orthodontics, co-authored the paper, "Lipoxin A4 Attenuates the Inflammatory Response in Stem Cells of the Apical Papilla via ALX/FPR2," published in Scientific Reports (8:1).

McGeorge School of Law

Michael Malloy, distinguished professor of law, had his fourth and final 2018 supplement to his three-volume treatise, "Banking Law and Regulation" published by Wolters Kluwer. The supplement offers up-to-date coverage of current developments in the regulation of depository institutions.

Ken Albala, professor of history, delivered the keynote address at the World Instant Noodle Summit in Osaka, Japan, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the invention of instant ramen by Momofuku Ando.

McGeorge School of Law

Mariam Elmenshawi, director of the Victims of Crime Resource Center, presented on "Exercising Victims' Rights — Key Issues in the Field of Law" at the California Crime Victim Assistance Association's victim advocate statewide training.  

Clark Kelso, professor of law, delivered the annual Supreme Court Review speech to the August luncheon meeting of the Sacramento Federal Bar Association.  

Development and Alumni Relations

Jonelle Beck, director of estate and gift planning and assistant general counsel, and Sheila Hard, senior planned giving officer, will give the presentation, "Accepting Complex Gifts of Real Estate: A Builder's Guide," at the 2018 National Association of Charitable Gift Planners Conference in Las Vegas, Oct. 17-19. CGP is the leading organization setting standards for charitable gift planners, bringing members together to learn, connect and advocate.
