Conservatory fall lineup features diverse talent

Conservatory features diverse talent

The fall schedule of concerts hosted by University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music features a diverse array of guest artists, conductors and composers with more than 20 performances scheduled through December.

“From Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony to Katahj Copley’s “Dope,” Pacific music faculty designed an undeniably inclusive series of events this fall,” said Dean Peter Witte. “Our string faculty play side by side with students in orchestral works by Pulitzer-winner Caroline Shaw, Jessie Montgomery and close with Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.”

“Emory University’s Gary Motley will be at the keyboard with Pacific Jazz. Valerie Sainte-Agathe of the San Francisco Girls Chorus and Ash Walker of the Oakland Symphony Choruses will lead Pacific’s storied choral ensembles. This fall, Faye Spanos Concert Hall is where it’s at,” Witte said.

Performances begin Wednesday, Sept. 11 with guest artist Biliana Voutchkova. The violinist and vocalist has performed at renowned concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York; the Berliner Philharmonie in Berlin, Germany; and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

The University Symphony Orchestra performs Sept. 14 under the direction of guest conductor Fernanda Lastra, assistant conductor for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The Argentinian-born conductor is an advocate for Latin American composers.

Students and faculty will perform pieces by composer-in-residence Catherine Likhuta Sept. 26 and 28th. The Ukranian-Australian’s pieces have been performed at prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall and Glyndebourne Opera House in England.

Music by faculty composer Andrew Conklin will premier Nov. 3 during a performance with Hub New Music. The Grammy-nominated ensemble, which includes flute, clarinet, violin and cello, was described as “contemporary chamber trailblazers” by the Boston Globe.

Pacific’s new Professor of Voice Heidi Moss Erickson is the featured soloist Nov. 8 in a performance with the University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Matilda Hofman, artistic director of the Left Coast Ensemble. Erickson is an accomplished performer and scientist specializing in the neuroscience of vocalization.

The community can hear Pacific’s award-winning Jazz Ambassadors weekly at the Take 5 Jazz Club inside Valley Brewing Company on the nearby Miracle Mile. Performances take place Thursdays at 7 p.m. from Sept. 5-Nov. 21 except Halloween. Tickets are available at the door for $5-$20.

Downbeat Magazine, the leading publication for jazz music in the United States, named the Jazz Ambassadors the best small jazz ensemble in the country in the undergraduate division earlier this year.
