| Astronautic Guests Say Reach For The Stars |
The University gave Robert Satcher, Jr. MD, PhD a warm welcome last Friday, along with Regent Jose Hernandez who had the task of introducing the astronaut, who shared his experiences with the community from the stage of the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. Dr. Satcher is beyond well educated, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science and PhD in chemical engineering. After this he received his medical degree from Harvard University in 1994. This man isn’t only bright, but a man who prides himself in his international humanitarian efforts, doing everything he can to make this world improve, such as joining other medical practices in such places as Venezuela, Gabon, and Nigeria. While sharing his wisdom with those in attendance, Dr. Satcher said, "Risk everything you have, everyday it is there for you to gamble." His presentation thoroughly expressed the triumphs that African- Americans have achieved since the late 1970s in astrological exploration. His main points were about his living life without boundaries, and he suggested that we all should live such courageous lives. He shared a video of his experience in orbit on the International Space Station, which showed the whole trip in short clips from pre-launch to their return to Earth. Regent Jose Hernandez, a Pacific graduate, was born in French Camp, Calif., and raised here in Stockton by his parents, a pair of immigrant farm workers that would migrate up and down the Central Valley in search of work. Hernandez is the youngest of four siblings. While watching the Apollo 17 mission at the age of nine, he told his father he wanted to be an astronaut. His father was surprisingly supportive, and gave him the five ingredients to reach your dreams. 1. Figure out what you want to be. 2. Measure how far away you're from it. 3. Take notice of where you are at and don't forget it. 4. Find out what you need to do to get where you want. 5. Never give up. Take it one step at a time. To mention the accolades of these two American heroes, who shared the same desire of getting into outer space from an early age, simply wouldn’t do them justice. The two of them were very charismatic, and inspired the audience. Both Regent Hernandez and Dr. Satcher were motivated by their elders and were told that they could achieve anything, which both said would give them the mindset that anything was possible.
